Master James Taylor

Owner & Chief Instructor

Master James Taylor is the Owner and Chief Instructor of Choi Kwang Do of North Florida, bringing over 30 years of martial arts experience and two decades of teaching to the High Springs community. A 5th Degree Black Belt in Choi Kwang Do, he is committed to helping students improve their health, confidence, and practical self-defense skills through a structured, non-competitive training approach.
 
Before opening his school, Master Taylor earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Florida and worked as an educator, and Industrial Salesman/ Educator, which continues to influence his teaching style today. His classes emphasize clear instruction, personal development, and a positive learning environment where students of all ages can succeed.
 
In addition to teaching, Master Taylor is deeply involved in the community, leading fundraising events and programs that give students the opportunity to make a meaningful impact beyond the classroom.

Deputy Master Juliet Taylor

Chief Instructor/ Owner/ Marketing Director

Deputy Master Juliet Taylor is a dedicated instructor at Choi Kwang Do of North Florida, known for her ability to connect with students and create a supportive, high-energy training environment. As a Deputy Master, she brings years of experience in both training and leadership, helping students develop strong fundamentals and confidence in their abilities.
 
DM Taylor holds a Business Administration Degree from The University of Florida. She plays a key role in working with younger students, ensuring they build coordination, discipline, and respect while still enjoying the learning process. Her attention to detail and encouraging teaching style help students progress at every level.
 
Deputy Master Juliet is committed to helping each student reach their full potential both on and off the mat.

Master Julie Taylor

Chief Instructor/ Owner

Master Julie Taylor is a 5th Degree Black Belt in Choi Kwang Do who began her training in 1993. With decades of experience, she has developed a deep understanding of the system and its ability to build strength, coordination, and confidence in students of all ages.
 
In addition to her extensive training, Master Julie has competed in international martial arts competitions, earning 1st place in multiple categories. Her competitive experience reflects both her technical excellence and her dedication to continuous improvement.
 
Outside the dojang, she holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Florida and serves as the Music Teacher at High Springs Community School, as well as the Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church in High Springs. Her background in education and the arts brings a unique level of structure, creativity, and engagement to her teaching style.
 
Master Julie is known for her ability to connect with students, helping them grow both in skill and in confidence through consistent, positive instruction.

Deputy Master Riley Smith

Head Instructor

Deputy Master Riley Smith is a Head Instructor who brings energy, precision, and strong leadership to every class. He works closely with students of all ages, helping them build solid technique, confidence, and consistency in their training.
 
His teaching style focuses on clear instruction and practical application, ensuring students not only understand techniques but can perform them effectively. He plays an important role in maintaining a positive and focused training environment.

Senior Head Instructor

Master Kelley Smith is the Senior Head Instructor at Choi Kwang Do of North Florida, bringing extensive experience and leadership to the instructional team. As a Master-level instructor, she plays a key role in guiding both students and staff, ensuring the highest standards of training are maintained.
 
She is deeply involved in mentoring instructors, refining curriculum delivery, and supporting students at advanced levels. Her experience allows her to provide valuable insight into both technical development and long-term progress in martial arts.
 
Master Kelley is respected for her professionalism, consistency, and commitment to excellence in every aspect of the program.

Master Justin Rix

Instructor

Master Justin Rix is a 5th Degree Black Belt in Choi Kwang Do who began his training under Master James Taylor in 2006. Over the years, he has developed a strong foundation in the system, combining technical precision with a deep understanding of its long-term benefits.
 
In addition to his martial arts experience, Dr. Rix earned his Doctorate of Pharmacology from the University of Florida. His background in the medical field provides a unique perspective on how Choi Kwang Do supports overall health, mobility, and longevity. He brings this insight into his teaching, helping students understand not just how to perform techniques, but why they are beneficial for the body.
 
Master Rix is known for his thoughtful approach to instruction and his ability to connect the principles of Choi Kwang Do with real-world health and wellness.

Deputy Master Joseph Smith

Head Instructor / Testing Coordinator

Deputy Master Joseph Smith serves as Head Instructor and Testing Coordinator, overseeing curriculum development and student progression within the school. With a strong technical background and deep understanding of Choi Kwang Do principles, he ensures that all students are trained to a high standard.
 
He is responsible for preparing students for belt testing, maintaining consistency across classes, and helping instructors deliver structured, effective lessons. His leadership helps create a clear path for students to grow and advance with confidence.
 
Deputy Master Joseph is known for his disciplined approach and commitment to helping students achieve measurable progress.
 
DM Smith is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at the University of Florida.

Deputy Master Tobin Shorey

Instructor

Deputy Master Tobin Shorey brings over 30 years of martial arts experience to Choi Kwang Do of North Florida. Throughout his training, he has earned Black Belts in three different disciplines, giving him a broad and well-rounded understanding of martial arts principles and application.
 
In addition to his martial arts background, Dr. Shorey holds a Doctorate in Russian History. His academic experience reflects a disciplined, analytical approach that carries over into his teaching, where he emphasizes precision, structure, and a deeper understanding of technique.
 
Deputy Master Tobin is known for his thoughtful instruction and ability to help students refine their skills while gaining a clearer understanding of the concepts behind their training. His combination of experience, knowledge, and attention to detail makes him a valuable part of the instructional team.
