Athletes need to fuel their bodies correctly to be able to keep up with their training routines. As an athlete, your physical health is key to an active lifestyle. You depend on strength, skill and endurance, whether you’re going for the final sprint to the finish line or practicing Choi Kwang Do.
- Don’t skip breakfast.
Breakfast kick starts your metabolism, helping you burn calories throughout the day. It also gives you the energy you need to get things done and helps you focus at work or school.
If you struggle with a lack of energy or frequent energy slumps mid-morning, you may be inadvertently causing this condition by skipping breakfast. Athletes need to be fully energized to successfully complete workouts.
- Stay hydrated.
Good hydration means getting the right amount of water before, during and after exercise. Water regulates body temperature and loosens joints. It helps transport nutrients for energy and keeps you healthy. If you're not hydrated, your body can't perform at its highest level.
- Replace lost electrolytes.
Sweating removes both fluids and electrolytes. Electrolytes help transmit nerve signals in your body. To replenish them, reach for sports drinks. If you’re also losing a lot of fluid as you sweat, dilute sports drinks with equal amounts of water to get the best balance of fluid and electrolytes.
